Deja Vu: Cam Ranh Bay-Naval Air Facility

The navy chow halls at the 14 aerialn had the best chow.

I was a K9 handler on patrol directly across from the navel air main gate on June 12, 1970 when the sapper attack happened. My dog picked them up coming through & I opened fire. I saw the tower take a B40 hit. I fired several clips at the sappers. An Air Force SAT team came up the road just as a sapper was crossing the road to the main gate. The guy on the 60 took him out. Shortly after that my dog picked up another group of 3 sappers in the wire in front of the monastery & we fired on them causing them to turn back. I thought I hit one as he was running. We stayed in position till dawn. There was a lot of gunfire for some time. At daylight the SAT team & other personnel along with our dogs made a sweep of the perimeter & monastery. We found one dead sapper st the monestary with a gunshot wound in his back.but the other 2 were not found. We found out later some were spotted swimming in the bay to a boat who picked them up. I have pictures of the wire where they penetrated along with the tower that was hit & the main gate & some of the dead sappers. It was a long night & day I won't ever forget. Sgt. J. Foster

There in 70-71 as an AZ1. AIMD and then had the pleasure of managing the EM Club until we turned the base over to the Army, then worked to close down the Navy activity as part of the «Fabulous 50» (I still have the plaque). Thanks to the author for putting this together — great job!
